At POTS, we implement complex projects in tricky places to achieve measurable, systemic impacts. Our impact framework helps us deliver tangible positive change even in the most difficult contexts.
Why Standards Matter
Imagine trying to improve early detection of prostate cancer in Ghana, where most patients arrive too late for effective treatment. Many well-intentioned projects might rush to build new facilities or launch awareness campaigns. But without understanding the complete picture, such initiatives often fail to create lasting change.
The POTS Approach
Our impact framework ensures that every initiative creates lasting change by following a proven methodology. Here's how this looked in practice in Ghana:
When working to improve prostate cancer early detection in the Greater Accra Region, our first step wasn't to design solutions - it was to understand needs. Through our "Start with the Need" standard, we discovered that the challenge wasn't just about medical facilities. There were multiple barriers: limited diagnostic services outside major hospitals, lack of awareness among men and community health workers, and services not covered by national health insurance.
Instead of implementing isolated solutions, we explored alternatives and existing initiatives. Following our framework, we developed a comprehensive approach that:
Worked with existing healthcare structures rather than creating parallel systems
Engaged multiple stakeholders including the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and teaching hospitals
Built capacity at multiple levels of the healthcare system
